      2000 burials

NOTE: This is the newest cemetery in South Kingstown started in 1931.

The information for this cemetery comes from the cemetery records

and not from the gravestones. We are indebted to _____, the owner

of the cemetery, for sharing the records. The records for this

cemetery document the race of some of the American Indian, Black

and Asian interments. This information being very important to

genealogists has been retained in this database. The small "b"

after some of the death years indicates it is the burial and not

the death date. Many of the records do not contain the age. A few

had death dates that were obviously typographical errors like

2009 and 2020 which have not happened yet in 2003. These have

been deleted and a few others have been repaired.

      GPS coordinates 41 deg. 28.928' x 71 deg. 32.626'

      Benns #458

3 pet markers: Angus Wally;  Sandy - 1927;  Taxie

This cemetery is under perpetual care administered by the

Pettaquamscutt Historical Society. On a recent trip to this

cemetery for maintenance Craig Anthony invited us to see the

Potter tomb and record the inscriptions. On entering the tomb

there is a chamber with nine crypts on the wall directly in

front. Seven of the crypts are used and sealed with a 25 inch by

35 inch slate stone inscribed with names and dates. The two

unused slates are leaning against the chamber wall for future

use. The damp nature of the tomb is causing the slate stones to

disintegrate. There are small stalactites coming down from the

ceiling and the very beginnings of stalagmites starting to form

      on the floor below them.

The crypts are in three rows of three. The top row is

numbered 1,2,3; the center row is numbered 4,5,6; and the bottom

row is numbered 7,8,9. Crypts number 3 and 4 are not used and

number 6 has a mother and son entombed.

beside the driveway to #1852 Ministerial Road on the south side

in size by the driveway. James Arnold did not record this lot in

1880 so we don't have any earlier knowledge of it.

Bill Sweet's notes indicate that Major Ebenezer Brenton who died

in South Kingstown in 1766 left this land to his daughter Ann and

her husband Martin Howard Jr. Ebenezer Brenton was the grandson

of Gov. William Brenton. This and the fact that one crude

NOTE: Enter the driveway to house #164 Middlebridge Road and proceed

Colletta's land. The site was heavily excavated in 1917 but in

2003 it is boggy and is heavily overgrown with thick brush, briars, and vines.

Seven fieldstone marked graves northeast of the site of the Bull

Block House on a knoll. Said to be the graves of settlers killed

in the block house by Indians during King Phillips War in 1675.

This property was the site of an archealogical dig in 1917 and is

now the property of the RI Historical Society.

In 1663 Jireh Bull purchased a 20 acre house lot stretching up

the hill from the river which formed the eastern boundary. In

1668 he purchased 500 acres from the Pettaquamscutt purchasers.

Captain Waite Winthrop writing to his father, Governor John

Winthrop of Connecticut, on July 9, 1675 describes the property

as "... large stone house with a good ston wall yard before it

which is a kind of small fortyfycation to it." During King

Phillip's War the Indians attacked and burned the house and

killed fifteen of the seventeen inhabitants. Jireh Bull was not

killed in the massacre but came back to live on the property

after the war. It is not clear whether the cemetery contains the

remains of these fifteen people or is simply the family burial
